If you are using username and password for SSH authentication, you will be prompted to enter your password. You need a SCP client which is included in Bash shell of most Linux distributions and Mac computers and PowerShell. It uses the same authentication and security as SSH. SCP is a common tool for secure copy files between a local and remote machine. If you are using Azure virtual machines and login with Azure Active Directory, you will get more instructions on how to connect. The last method is specific to Microsoft Azure and requires a bit of setup by Azure administrator as well as installing some software. The first three methods can be used to access any virtual machines that you have ssh connection. We decided to write down four ways to achieve this goal. In this post, we will not go through performance considerations for each tool/method. There are no requirements for retaining the permissions on the files being transferred. We are referring to Linux virtual machines in this post unless we explicitly mention Windows virtual machines as well. They also need to download some result files or data to their local machines. There is a common need for our researchers to securely transfer small or large files to virtual machines for various purposes. ![]()

![]() In the San Francisco Bay Area, the San Andreas system of faults spans offshore and into the East Bay area, with the bulk of the faults lying to the east of the main SAF. It terminates in the south at the Salton Sea where displacement transitions to a series of spreading centers and transform faults, beginning with the Brawley Seismic Zone in the Imperial Valley. This system of faults terminates in the north at the Mendocino Triple Junction, one of the most seismically active regions in the state, where earthquakes are occasionally the result of intraplate deformation within the Gorda Plate. The plate margin that remains in California is that of the strike-slip San Andreas Fault (SAF), the diffuse Pacific–North American plate boundary that extends east into the Basin and Range Province of eastern California and western Nevada (a seismically active area called Walker Lane) and southwest into the California Continental Borderland region off the central and southern coasts. ![]() Presently, the Juan de Fuca Plate (with its Explorer and Gorda satellite plates) and the Rivera and Cocos Plates are the only remnants of the once much larger Farallon Plate. See also: Los Angeles Basin, Mendocino Fracture Zone, and Salton Troughĭuring the last 66 million years, nearly the entire west coast of North America was dominated by a subduction zone, with the Farallon Plate subducting beneath the North American Plate. Higher standards were established for fire stations, hospitals, and schools, and construction of dwellings was also restricted near active faults. In both cases, the perception of California policy makers changed, and state laws and building codes were modified (with much debate) to require commercial and residential properties to be built to withstand earthquakes. Some decades later, the San Fernando earthquake affected the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles with heavy damage to several hospitals. In 1933, the Long Beach earthquake occurred in a populated area and damaged or destroyed many public school buildings in Long Beach and Los Angeles. ![]() Įarly developments at the Caltech lab included an earthquake observation network using their own custom-built short-period seismometers, the Richter magnitude scale, and the Modified Mercalli intensity scale (an updated version of the Mercalli intensity scale). The outlook improved when Professor Andrew Lawson brought the state's first monitoring program online at the University of California, Berkeley in 1910 with seismologist Harry Wood, who was later instrumental in getting the Caltech Seismological Laboratory in Pasadena operational in the 1920s. The United States Weather Bureau did record when they happened and several United States Geological Survey scientists had briefly disengaged from their regular duties of mapping mineral resources to write reports on the New Madrid and Charleston events, but no trained geologists were working on the problem until after 1906 when the Coast and Geodetic Survey was made responsible. Prior to that, no agency was specifically focused on researching earthquake activity. California earthquakes (1769–2000)Īccording to seismologist Charles Richter, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake moved the United States Government into acknowledging the problem. Following destructive earthquakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, real estate developers, press, and boosters minimized and downplayed the risk of earthquakes out of fear that the ongoing economic boom would be negatively affected. ![]() By this time, scientists were well aware of the threat, but seismology was still in its infancy. While the 1812 San Juan Capistrano, 1857 Fort Tejon, and 1872 Owens Valley shocks were in mostly unpopulated areas and only moderately destructive, the 1868 Hayward event affected the thriving financial hub of the San Francisco Bay Area, with damage from Santa Rosa in the north to Santa Cruz in the south. Since the three damaging earthquakes that occurred in the American Midwest and the East Coast ( 1755 Cape Ann, 1811–12 New Madrid, 1886 Charleston) were well known, it became apparent to settlers that the earthquake hazard was different in California. From 1850–2004, there was about one potentially damaging event per year on average, though many of these did not cause serious consequences or loss of life. After the missions were secularized in 1834, records were sparse until the California Gold Rush in the 1840s. As Spanish missions were constructed beginning in the late 18th century, earthquakes records were kept. Ship captains and other explorers also documented earthquakes. state of California was documented in 1769 by the Spanish explorers and Catholic missionaries of the Portolá expedition as they traveled northward from San Diego along the Santa Ana River near the present site of Los Angeles. And now Spike Lee has done it with David Byrne’s American Utopia. Jonathan Demme did it with Stop Making Sense. Martin Scorsese did it with The Last Waltz. Keep the music alive everyone!) and even if a filmmaker is lucky enough to be in attendance on one of those gloriously special nights, they have to be good enough at their job to make the whole thing come alive for audiences at home. It’s no mean feat, considering that watching a gig on a screen can rarely, if ever, live up to actually being in the audience (though we’re grateful for all those live streams at the moment. The job of a great concert film is to capture one of these experiences on film for all time. These genuinely extraordinary gigs are perhaps as rare as the dreary ones but while the disappointments can be quickly and quietly filed away with life’s other let-downs, the transcendent experiences stay with you for a lifetime, rewriting your timeline, adjusting your future expectations and nourishing your music-loving heart. And then there are those certain evenings that turn out to be so indescribably joyous that you reel from them for days afterwards, treasuring the high-pitched ringing in your ears as a souvenir. Of course, such miserable experiences are few and far between and most gigs I’ve been to over the years have been at least solidly enjoyable, many of them great. I long for the time in years (months? decades?) to come when I can start hating such experiences again, rather than longing for their dank disappointments. And yet I feel I would enjoy even one of these nightmare evenings right now. But only the lucky few have never experienced watching a band they love flounder on stage while hoping this is the last song, desperately holding onto that urgent piss while counter-productively quaffing the pint they bought even though they were full. You’ve paid the money so you try to make the best of it, to stick it out to the bitter end. But the truth is we’ve all been to some disappointing gigs in our time. Gigs, for instance, seem like a holy grail to us music lovers and the temptation is to remember every single one we’ve been to as a positive experience. In such uncertain times, we long for the comforts of a world we are already struggling to remember accurately. Or maybe, to look at it more optimistically, we’re at the end of one… or it could just be just the beginning. As I write this, we’re in the middle of a global pandemic. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately I don't know what sort of forces might be produced by a canopy that's unlatched and raised. (Or maybe use a Dremel cut-off disc to make a lengthwise cut in the loops of the existing hinges.) I'm planning to rig up test piano hinges to measure the forces needed to detach them, for both potential solutions. These might be weak enough to release the canopy. Replace the continuous piano hinges with the type that is made from flanges bent to form the tubes for the wire. The two cotter pins would be connected with a cord so I could pull them out with a single motion. ![]() I think I might retain one screw on each hinge and hold it in place with a cotter pin bent only enough to keep it in place. This worries me a bit, as I don't want the canopy coming off accidentally. Does anyone have specs for the appropriate rivets? I'd have to add washers to reduce the hole size, as pop rivets the same size as the -10 screws would be much too strong. Does anyone have information from Giles on the recommended attachment devices? (Or from Van's?) I'm considering two approaches: 1. The construction manual I received with the plane doesn't cover the canopy. I've seen other planes (RV4, G202) with what look like pop rivets attaching the hinges, which are supposed to tear away when the canopy is unlatched and lifted. The piano hinges have continuous loops encircling the wire, which definitely will not break to release the canopy. My newly purchased G-200 has the canopy piano hinges screwed solidly to the airframe and canopy frame. ![]() ![]() ![]() How to Boot your Computer using the Recovery DriveĪs we mentioned earlier, you can use Recovery drive to either repair or re-install the operating system.
